Who to root for...?

So, when your team is not playing, who do you root for?

Refusing to watch, just because your team isn't in it, is the sport-equivalent of a being a nationalist, and a sour-grapes fox.

For the rest of us, who love the game...it's tricky. City, league, sentimental, underdog, favorite? Or do you just root for a "great Series"?

Forget the Nets, just give us the Net. For free. In our hands, like.

Google proposes free Wi-Fi for San Francisco - Yahoo! News

Google is going to try to give free wireless to San Francisco. The City of Philadelphia is working on offering the same thing, and it was battled by private enterprises on the reason that the government shouldn't be offering the internet. Ironic, since the government created the Internet, but whatever. There may be some interesting problems with SF, though, since the terrain, hills, etc might make it a challenge to ensure coverage.

So here's my proposal. People say the new Net's Arena in Brooklyn will bring jobs to Brooklyn. I do not disagree. Question is, what kind of jobs does an arena bring? I'm guessing things like concessions, merchandise, ushers. And basically seasonal jobs, and in general jobs that are be transplanted from NJ. Of course there will be all those new bars, too, but how much will they siphon off customers from the places already in Park Slope. And there will all that new office space, but I don't recall downtown experiencing a shortage right now. And then there's all that affordable housing they're going to build. Right.

What if the borough (Hey Marty!) approached GOOG and asked them to try out the free wireless thing in Brooklyn? That would instantly create a need for a number of new jobs, starting with the people installing the wireless network, and maintaining it. It's a draw for Brooklyn to have that kind of access to information, for anyone. "But people don't all have PDA's". Sure, but a lot of people have iPods, and in a few months a nice PDA or wireless device will be cheaper than an iPod and will do just as much, and more.

I work on the web, so I'm sure I'm biased, right? But if every kid in Brooklyn had free access to the web, that sounds like a good thing.

Better even than free Nets tickets, I'd wager.

Learning Guitar

How to Rapidly Learn to Play the Acoustic Guitar Yourself - WikiHow

This is pretty nifty, and certainly true. If you're leaning towards trying to learn an instrument, I'd suggest the guitar. It's the simplest instrument to sound good with, relatively quickly. Lifetime to master, sure, but if you're just looking to make some good sound, go for it.

Um...hey, about that terror alert...

Use iTunes? Use Firefox? Get FoxyTunes!

FoxyTunes - Control any media player from Firefox and more...

Pretty nice extension for Firefox, the FoxyTunes media player / controller. It's been a bit annoying to have to have iTunes as a miniplayer, so that I can control it while I'm working, and there's still no good place to put it on the screen to keep it out of the way.

FoxyTunes turns your Firefox into a controller for any number of media players, including iTunes. Try it out...

Robot cars cross desert

CNN.com - Four vehicles finish in $2 million robot race - Oct 8, 2005

Pretty interesting, they build robot cars to cross a desert obstacle course, and the primary application mentioned near the story's lead is to replace soldiers on battlefields.

Sad, when there are easily 10 other non-military applications that would better serve mankind...

shootfirst.org: shoot first, ask questions never!

shootfirst.org: shoot first, ask questions never!

Wow...what else can you say? Take a cliche', make it into law, and you've got this beauty. Somehow I don't think this is going to have the result that people who thought it up intended. Unless they're extremely devious.
